Brother Steve Heller stars in The Eastern Regional Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament

Two Springfield Council sponsored Knights of Columbus teams ventured to Wilmington, Delaware on April 14 and April 15, 2007 to participate in the Eastern Regional  Knights of Columbus bowling tournament competing against other East Coast K of C Councils bowling teams. Our Council’s two bowling teams consisted of the MONDAY KNIGHTS, Captained by PGK Lou Tobat with team members Brothers Tony Dzierski, Jim Bertine, Larry Carter and Lou Crescioli and the STORMY KNIGHTS Captained by PGK Steve Heller with team members Brothers Mike Gross, Matthew Heller, Troy Maisel, and Steve Heller.  The teams did very well against a very strong field with the STORMY KNIGHTS combining for a very fine total score of 3302 including handicap and the MONDAY KNIGHTS combined for a score of 2928.  The Stormy Knights score should be good enough to earn a cash prize.  Larry Carter had the high game scratch knocking down 259 pins and a scratch high set of  645.  Steve Heller also had a very fine 221 game and a 569 set.

In the Singles event, Brother Matthew Heller led all of our bowlers with a very fine total score of 679 for a handicap average of 226 per game.  Just behind Matt was his father Steve Heller with a total of 643 followed by Larry Carter with a 632.  Congratulations to Matthew for his very fine effort and hopefully he will also earn a cash award.

In the Doubles event, Brother Steve Heller teamed with Substitute bowler Brother Brian Tobin to earn the top bowling honors with a very fine 1312 set.  Steve bowled a very fine series of 564 in this event.

In the All Events category which combines the scores of the Team event, Doubles and Singles events, Brother Steve Heller again excelled to top all of our Springfield bowlers with an outstanding 9 game total of 1668 pins combined with a 324 handicap pins giving him a grand total of 1992 pins for a combined handicap average per game of 221.  Great bowling Steve!  He was closely followed by his son, Matthew Heller with a grand total of 1961 and averaged 218.  Third place went to Larry Carter with games series of 575, 537, and 645 for a scratch total of 1757 and scratch average 195.  This is really a fine accomplishment on some very difficult and trying lanes.

SOFTBALL

SPRINGFIELD KNIGHTS SOFTBALL RECAP FOR 2007 SEASON

The St. Bernadette's Knights finished 4th in Division 1 of the Fairfax County Church League with a record of 5 wins 11 losses.  The League has 6 divisions with 5 teams each.  After losing the first 4 games the Knights went on to win 5 and lose 7 of the next 12 games.

It was a rather unusual season to say the least.  Our regular season ended on June 5th, five full weeks before the tournament started.  Our season ended before most teams had played one-half of their schedule. With players already making summer commitments, the Knights did not participate in the Knights of Columbus State Tournament this year. A number of players missed games due to travel commitments and visits to the DL (disabled list).  This resulted in patchwork lineups for much of the season.

Marty Long and John Hodapp led the team in home runs while Billy McCarron led in triples.  The K of C members on the team included Mike Atwood, OF-1B; Kevin Becks 3B-2B; Steve Heller C-DH; John Hodapp, LCF; Fr. Pat Holroyd, OF; Rick Kowalski, IF; Marty Long LF; Bill McCarron, Sr. P; Billy McCarron, Jr. SS; Mike Murphy, C-DH-Mgr; Chuck Schillinger C-1B; Craig Seykowski, IF-OF, Mark Price P-OF, and Walt Ferony P.

For the record:  Walt set a team and league record by recording an earned run average (ERA) of 105.00 for a 7 inning game. That is, 5 earned runs in one-third of an inning.

On behalf of Mike Murphy, who recently returned from a 10 day-175 mile pilgrimage (walk) in Spain and myself, we promise the team will do better next year since we plan to do some aggressive recruiting,

Bill McCarron, Sr.

FISHING

JUNE FISHING TRIP AND FISH FRY

The Council's fishing party had loads of fish and mucho fun on the Chesapeake Bay this past June 26th.  The chartered boat, bearing the name of "Miss Antonia" and skippered by Charlie Nicholson, was most comfortable for Brothers Lou Crescioli, Joe Krupp, John Caldwell, Bob Golden, Tony Dzierski and Tom & Andy Feerst.  The weather was perfect, assisting the group in boating 60 fighting Blues (each weighing about three pounds) and about 20 huge Croakers (each weighing about two pounds).

Following the successful fishing trip, a fish fry was held the next evening at the St. Bernadette Church cafeteria, where the Council members, with family, enjoyed a delicious fish dinner with all the trimmings.  All persons present at the fish fry took the opportunity to thank the aforementioned seven fishermen for their efforts in behalf of the Council.  It was truly a prosperous fishing experience, followed by a bountiful fish fry.

Our Council is active in many sports activities year round. Getting involved in these activities can help you meet Brother Knights and their families while having a great time in the process. So don't wait to be the last one picked, come out and join us now!
